1. With the rise in recent technology we seem to be rapidly losing the art of conversation. Talking on the phone used to be the means of communication for most people, but over the last 20 years texting or instant messaging has developed into one of the most popular ways of keeping in touch with friends and family.
Recent studies have shown that people are more likely to text than actually talk. Texting is great for quick short messages and meaningless banter. But it is very difficult to have a deep and meaningful text conversation. Firstly, you cannot hear the intonation when someone is texting you. Secondly, texting lacks eye contact and body language, which are crucial facets of face-to-face communication. So, whatever is happening in your world, put that mobile phone down and talk to someone before you forget how.
The New Words:
1. banter |ˈbæntə| - шутливая беседа
2. crucial |ˈkruːʃ(ə)l| - решающий; ключевой
3. facet |ˈfæsɪt| - грань, аспект
2. There is nothing fancy or expensive about happiness. On the contrary, happiness is simple and slow. It means choosing peace and quiet over excitement. It is wearing your old pyjamas and watching a movie on the day before Christmas. It is sitting in your window watching the weather while sipping your favourite tea on a rainy day. It is looking into the bonfire surrounded by your friends and family while your bread is slowly baking.
Happiness is always about appreciating the simple pleasures in life and thus it can be achieved on a really low budget. You cannot buy the right atmosphere or a sense of togetherness. It's all about time, interest and engagement in the people around you. Thus, happiness is an atmosphere which is not improved by spending more money on it, but rather, in some ways, the opposite. After all, the best things in life are absolutely free.
3. The life of Indians is centered in the family. Extended families often live together, with two or more adult generations, or brothers, sharing a house. In much of the countryside, neighboring houses share a wall, so from the street one sees a continuous wall pierced by doorways. In other areas, in the south for example, the main house will have a veranda on the street, with an open courtyard behind. As people get richer, they introduce improvements like tiled roofs to their houses. Most home activity is outside in the compound courtyard or on the verandas of the house.
Only in a few parts of India do people live on their farmland. The village is thus a settlement area, or a set of settlement areas, surrounded by unbroken fields, with farms frequently made up of separated plots. A large village will have a primary school, and a small shop or two.

Early in the morning, Evenki natives in the hills northwest of Lake Baikal observed a column of blue light. It was nearly as bright as the Sun, and it was moving across the sky. About ten minutes later, there was a flash and a sound similar to artillery fire. Eyewitnesses reported that the source of the sound was moving from the east to the north following the movement of the blue light. The sound was accompanied by a shock wave that knocked people off their feet and broke windows in the houses hundreds of kilometres away. As it often happens, eyewitnesses’ accounts varied regarding the sequence and duration of the events. On that day the legendary Tungus meteorite or a small comet fell on the Earth near the river called Podkamennaya Tunguska in Siberia. It happened at about seven o’clock in the morning, on the 30th of June 1908. The first expedition came to the site only ten years later.

Everyone loves hobbits. Ask anyone who's fan of the Lord of the Rings to choose their favourite character and nine times out of ten it will be Samwise Gamgee. He's loyal, innocent and determined and without him Frodo couldn't have saved Middle Earth. He represents the Shire with all its comfort, safety and stability and these same attributes make Hobbit Holes special.
For those whose hearts belong forever in the Shire, there's place they can go to. Called Hobbiton, it's a movie set experience that's nestled in the heart of a small town in New Zealand. Lush pastures are punctuated with 44 tiny Hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Pub, Mill, double arched bridge and the famous Party Tree built directly into the sides of rolling hills. The daily tours allow visitors to enter the small lairs and pretend they're one of the mythical humanoids.
The first human carrying flight technology was the hot air balloon. While unmanned balloons have been around in some form for thousands of years, the first flight with people on board was in 1782.
The large balloon on top is called an "envelope". It holds hot air created by a heat source known as a burner. The burner creates an open flame by burning a mix of propane and air. Hot air balloons are capable of floating because the hot air inside the envelope has a lower density than the colder air outside. The top of the balloon usually has a vent which allows the pilot to control the speed of ascent or descent. Passengers typically stand in a basket beneath the envelope.
While most envelopes have a standard balloon shape, others are designed to look like animals, cartoon characters and other fun objects.
Stress is the feeling of being under emotional pressure and is the body’s way of attempting to deal with a tough situation. It can be caused by anything from a real physical threat such as bullying to a simple fear of making a presentation in front of the class and can affect how you think, feel, behave and how your body functions. When the body feels stressed, it produces hormones to make you more alert and capable of handling the situation. These hormones speed up the metabolism by increasing breathing and heart rate and raising blood pressure.
A reasonable amount of stress is good for the body. It keeps you on your toes and improves your performance. However, frequent stress causes the nervous system to remain on alert and to produce excessive amounts of stress hormones. This can have an adverse effect on your performance, leave you feeling tired and weakened and eventually cause health problems such as acne, high blood pressure, depression or other diseases. Obviously, managing stress should be on everyone’s mind.

Task 1.
Read the text aloud.
Canada's original inhabitants are Indians. The very name Canada comes from a word meaning "village" in one of the local languages of Indian tribes. These tribes lived on the territory of modern Canada before the first Europeans arrived in the 11th century. They soon left, but more Europeans came in the 16th century and were made welcome because they brought manufactured goods and traded them for furs and other native products. However, the Europeans settled down and gradually displaced Indians over the next 250 years.
European settlers came in a series of waves. First were the French, followed by the English, and these two groups are considered the founding nations. France lost its part of territory to Britain in a war in 1760, but most of the French-speaking colonists remained. Their effort to preserve their language and culture is still an issue of Canadian history and has led in recent years to a movement to become independent from the rest of Canada.

ОГЭ - 2024 по английскому в цифрах:
Family Relations. Лексика для подготовки к ОГЭ
It is impossible to imagine our life without family. Family is believed by many people to be the most important thing in their life while other people consider it differently. I would like to express my own opinion on this point of view.
I am in favour of the idea that family is the most essential part of people’s life. Firstly, everybody needs love, care and protection, parents, grandparents and relatives can really give all these things. Therefore, people do not feel lonely and sad. Secondly, family brings children up and provides them with education. Humans really should appreciate the fact that parents give them the chance to be not only rich and smart but good and honest, too. Finally, family passes traditions and life’s guidelines that humans use in the future. For example, it is an attitude to other people, family or children. It is really important for people’s life in society.
Some people think differently. They consider that family is not very significant in life and relatives just do not let people have high results.
I do not fully agree with the above statement because I think that family helps to achieve aims and goals in life. Having some difficulties and problems, the support of loved ones can help to solve these problems and achieve greater results than people might think.
In conclusion, I would like to say that family is the most significant thing in our life. It gives people everything and surrounds humans with care and love that all people need.

Japan is an island nation in East Asia, located in the North Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Asian continent. Japan comprises the four main islands in addition to numerous smaller islands. Tokyo is the country's capital and largest city.
Mountains dominate Japan's landscape, covering 75 to 80 percent of the country. Historically, the mountains were barriers to transportation, limiting the economic development of isolated areas. However, with the development of tunnels, bridges, and air transportation in the modern era, the mountains are no longer an obstacle. The Japanese have long celebrated the beauty of their mountains in art and literature, and today many mountain areas are preserved in national parks.
Most of Japan's people live on plains and lowlands found mainly along the lower courses of the country's major rivers, on the lowest slopes of mountain ranges, and along the sea coast. This concentration of people makes Japan one of the world's most crowded countries.
Practise reading the words:
2. numerous |ˈnjuːm(ə)rəs|

- give a brief description of the photos, justifying the choice of the photos for the project;
- say in what way the pictures are different, justifying the choice of - the photos for the project;
- mention the advantages and disadvantages (1-2) of the two types of books;
- express your opinion on the subject of the project
See the sample talk on the photos for the project "Noble professions".
Task 4
• give a brief description of the photos , justifying the choice of the photos for the project;
• say in what way the pictures are different, justifying the choice of the photos for the project;
• mention the advantages and disadvantages (1–2) of the two types of professions;
• explain how these photos illustrate the project “Noble professions”;
• express your opinion on the subject of the project – whether you would like to choose one of these professions as your future career, why or why not.
Hello, Mary! I hope you received the photos I sent you. I'm sure they will illustrate perfectly the project we are working on - “Noble professions” - because in the first picture there is a young woman who is a teacher, while the second picture shows a woman who is a doctor, a pediatrician, to be exact.
The teacher is at the lesson. She is pointing to some lines in her pupil’s exercise-book. The doctor is in her room at a hospital examining a young patient’s lungs with a stethoscope. The professions of a teacher and that of a doctor are both noble. Though both jobs are aimed at helping people, there is an obvious difference between them. While the teacher develops her students’ minds and broadens their horizons, the doctor helps her patients to stay healthy and keep fit.
I’m sure one of the advantages of a teacher’s job is that it motivates a person to develop themselves as a personality. However, there is a disadvantage - the necessity to check a great number of students’ works – that is really time consuming and monotonous. The main attractive feature of a doctor’s job is that doctors deal with patients and when patients get over their illnesses, a doctor feels satisfaction. There is a disadvantage of making a mistake when making a diagnosis.
I believe, the photos I have found illustrate the project perfectly as in both of them we see real professionals who are satisfied with their work.
In my case, I wouldn’t like to choose one of these professions as my future career as I am not cut out for the jobs. I don’t have enough patience to deal with children and sick people.
Call me back and tell if you find these photos suitable for our project.
Note:
- проблема проекта должна прослеживаться на протяжении всего высказывания
- обращение и завершение высказывания - максимально естественно
- описание, конечно, может быть про место и действие, но нужно, чтобы оно было привязано к теме проекта
Ways of Shopping
Hello, (name) I hope you received the photos I sent you (Have you received the photos I sent you?)
I'm sure they will illustrate perfectly the project we are working on - different ways of shopping - because in the first picture there is a person who is doing shopping in a mall,while the second picture shows a girl who is shopping online.
In fact, these pictures are the evidence of the opposite trends we can observe nowadays - buying things on the Internet and going real-life shopping.
Advantages and disadvantages (1-1, 1-1) -
Эта часть высказывания должна быть наиболее объемной
Opinion (If you ask me, ...to tell the truth, ...honestly, ...) Необходимо рассказать, какой вариант шопинга, чтения, ...) ты предпочитаешь, НЕ ИЛЛЮСТРАЦИИ!!!
Завершение разговора - Call me back and tell if you find these photos suitable for our project.

ЗАДАНИЕ
Imagine that you are doing a project on what people use their smartphones for. You have collected some data on the subject (see the diagram below). Comment on the data in the diagram and give your personal opinion on the subject of the project.
Write 200–250 words.
Use the following plan:
– make an opening statement on the subject of the project work;
– select and report 2–3 main features;
– make 1–2 comparisons where relevant;
– outline a problem that can arise with using smartphones and suggest the way of solving it;
– draw a conclusion giving your personal opinion on the role of smartphones in our life.
ОТВЕТ
Smartphones have become an integral part of the modern life. People use them for different purposes: sending and receiving email, making phone calls, surfing the Internet, etc. I have done a project on the use of smartphones and now I am going to comment on the data and give my personal opinion on the subject.
According to the research, sending and receiving electronic letters has a strong lead in using smartphones. Seventy-nine per cent of people consider these devices the best means to be in correspondence with their friends and family. At the same time, making phone calls is ranked number two in the purposes smartphones are used for. Specifically, people speak on the phone in seventy-eight per cent of the cases.
The next top positions are held by surfing the Internet and playing games while differing from each other by ten per cent sharp. In fifty-eight cases people connect to the World Wide Web with their smartphones, and in forty-eight cases they take their above-mentioned devices to start a game.
Considering the frequency of using smartphones, sense of sight may take a turn for the worse. To reduce the damage it is highly recommended to buy models with high resolution screen and to make special exercises for the eyes.
In conclusion, I would like to stress the fact that a smartphone is indispensable for everyone because of its functional variety.

Dear Mary,
Thanks a lot for your letter. It was great to hear from you again!
First of all, let me tell you about my one-week holiday in Rome.
Everything was OK, but we didn't like out hotel. It was too noisy and the food was awful. We even had a stomach ache and consulted a doctor. However, all the excursions were extremely interesting. We visited the Vatican and were impressed by the famous St.Peter's Cathedral. It's the biggest and the most beautiful cathedral I've ever seen. All in all, we enjoyed our holiday.
And what about you? What are your plans for the summer? Will you come to visit me? What Russian cities would you like to see? I'll show you lots of interesting places.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Lots of love,
Lucy

This is the way to describe photos in the RNE format:
Getting ready for the RNE (Speaking)
Cobras in snake-charming acts are responding to the sight of the flute, not its sound. Snakes don’t really hear music though they are certainly not deaf. They have no external ears or eardrums, but can sense vibrations transmitted up from the ground into their jaw and the belly muscles. They also seem to be able to detect airborne sounds via an inner ear. It used to be thought that snakes could not hear at all because they don’t respond to loud noises but research at Princeton has shown that they have acute hearing.
The key discovery was how the snake’s inner ear functions. It appears that their hearing is tuned to the frequency range of noises and vibrations made by the movement of larger animals, so music would be meaningless to them. Charmed cobras stand upright if threatened and sway in response to the movement of the instrument. If they strike at the flute, they hurt themselves, so they don’t do it again.

Some paintings found in different caves around the world are recognized as the work of Stone Age artists. But what was the purpose of the paintings? Why were they hidden in a dark room where there is no evidence that cave people lived?
No one really knows, but there is one theory that makes great sense. It is called the theory of Sympathetic Magic. According to this, the cave people believed that if they could make a likeness of an animal, they could put a spell over it. This spell would give the tribe power over the live animal.
Stone Age existence depended on killing animals – for food, clothing, and even weapons and tools. The animals were large and fierce; the cave people had only the most simple weapons. Hunters had to be brave and fearless. They needed more than a spear or club; they needed all the magic they could get. The magic could help the hunters catch the animals.

Write an opinion essay on whether your school should
install CCTV cameras. Formal style.
Paragraph plan
Introduction: introduce topic
Para 2: arguments in favour of the topic
Para3: arguments against the topic
Conclusion: summary and opinion or general
statement
Topic sentences for main body paragraphs:
1) On the one hand, CCTV cameras in schools
might make people think twice before they
commit a crime like beating someone up or
stealing someone’s personal property.
2) On the other hand, CCTV cameras add to the
sense that ‘Big Brother’ is watching us—even in
schools.
Introduction:
It is no secret that crime is on the rise. In an effort to
prevent illegal activities such as muggings, burglaries
and robberies, police have placed CCTV cameras in
the streets, outside shops, and in banks and other
buildings. As far as I am concerned, this is a good
practice because it may act as a deterrent to
criminals. But do we really need CCTV cameras in
our schools?
Conclusion:
Generally speaking, I think that having CCTV cameras
in schools is a necessary evil because crimes are on
the increase even in our institutions of education.
Although I do feel that these cameras violate our
rights, if students are not doing anything wrong, they
really don’t have anything to fear, do they?
Speaking Task 1 (p. 147)
Model Answer – Student B
I am going to talk about leisure activities for young
people.
Leisure activities are the things we do in our free time
such as sports or hobbies.They are important because
they help to keep us mentally and physically healthy.
When we do something we enjoy in our free time, it
helps us to forget our problems. Whether it’s playing
tennis, listening to music or playing chess, the activity
takes our minds off our work or any other problems we
have.
My friends and I all enjoy playing hockey and we practice
after school 3 days a week. Sometimes we enter interschool
competitions and visit other schools at the
weekends for these. Playing hockey is a fabulous way to
stay healthy and it makes me feel very happy too. I have
been playing hockey since I was ten years old.
As well as playing hockey, I also enjoy reading and
watching films. These are relaxing for me. When I was
younger I didn’t like reading very much. I started reading
the Harry Potter books because one of my friends gave
me the book as a present. Ever since then, I have read
the whole series. I have also seen the films, but I like to
have read the book first. Now, I read all kinds of books,
but when I really want to lose myself, I read Agatha
Christie. I have to keep turning the page to find out who
committed the crime and I forget about everything else.
Films are the same and the nice thing about films is that
you can watch them with your friends and be sociable.
Finding something you enjoy doing in your free time is
important and it helps if your school and your parents
encourage you to try different activities to help you
choose. Some leisure activities can be expensive, such as
horse riding - especially if you have your own horse. I’m
glad I have found activities that I both enjoy and can
afford.
Form 11A
Model Answer – Student A
I am going to talk about shopping habits and in
particular, advertising and the environmental
consequences of shopping.
First of all, people’s shopping habits are changing. My
parents didn’t use to have as much choice as we have
now. The choice of goods to buy and the choice of
places to buy goods is much wider these days. People
spend whole days in shopping malls looking in shops and
comparing prices and products. Shopping has become a
leisure activity for some people.
Online shopping is the biggest change to shopping
habits. Now people can order their groceries from the
supermarket online as well as books, music, DVD’s and
clothes. In fact, just about anything can be bought online
these days, on websites such as eBay.
Sunday trading means that people can go shopping seven
days a week and many shops are open in the evenings or
even 24 hours a day.This is convenient for workers and
for families, as it offers greater freedom of choice as to
how they spend their weekend. It is also good for the
economy when people continue to spend their money
seven days a week.
Television advertising is a very powerful force that
persuades people to buy goods. Products are shown to
improve our lives and we are tempted to try them.
When I was young I often wanted toys that I saw on TV
advertisements. Magazines also contain a lot of
attractive advertisements, making products seem
glamorous and desirable. I have been persuaded to try
beauty products by such advertisements.
Some people do not see the connection between
shopping and the environment.However, shopping might
be bad for the environment. One reason is that so many
goods are pre-packaged in plastic wrapping.This ends up
on our streets and in rubbish dumps and it is not
biodegradable, it takes hundreds of years to break
down. Fortunately, many people are learning how to be
an environmentally friendly shoppers. They are not
taking plastic carrier bags in supermarkets and buying
products that are not pre-packaged avoids unnecessary
waste.We can all help by doing the same.
SPEAKING
Give a 2-min talk about a person you admire. Remember to say:
- who the person is and what he/she is like;
-what he/she does/has done in his/her life;
- why you admire him/her;
- what you can do to become like him/her.
Suggested Answer Key
One person I really admire is Madonna. Born
into a large Italian family, she first trained as a
dancer. Today, she is best known for her success
as a pop star, actress and producer. She has had
more number one singles than any other
female singer and she has won numerous
awards for her work. She travels a lot, working
in the USA and the UK and also finds time to do
charity work and be a mother!
Madonna continues to be successful because of
her ability to recreate her image. She is an
important role model for teenagers. She keeps
trying new things and never gives up. I would
like to live such a full life as Madonna. She is
an inspiration
