Some New Facts About English articles
A noun is used as apposition:

2. the definite article (we speak about famous people): Leonardo di Caprio, the popular actor, is arriving on Monday.
3. the definite article (the noun in apposition stands before the modified noun): the new teacher Mr Smith
4. the definite article ( the situation shows that the noun in opposition is a definite one): Ann, the woman who helped my uncle, was very nice.
